International Youth Programs
The AJC provides an opportunity for young people from Europe to spend two weeks living and working in Oswiecim, learning about pre-War Jewish heritage and history and contributing to their surroundings. Sponsored by the AJC and the European Union, the program is geared for young adults, ages 18 to 25.
During the summer of 2003, participants from Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, Poland and Spain helped maintain grounds and matzevot (tombstones) of the Jewish cemetery of Oswiecim. They also engaged in cultural, educational and social activities designed to introduce them to the local history and traditions and give them an opportunity to learn about each other’s countries and customs. In addition to visiting the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum, the group took day trips to the nearby cities of Krakow, Bielsko-Biala, and Pszczyna.
