Zola and the Dreyfus Affair: A Moment in the Conscience of Humanity
May 2004
One hundred years ago, in a sharply divided France, the Dreyfus Affair raised moral and social issues which still resonate today.
This exhibition, from the collection of Dr. Lorraine Beitler, sheds light on questions of civil rights, abuses of state power and the role of the media in modern society.
A wide variety of archival materials—works of art, photographs, letters, broadsides and periodicals are on display, including the celebrated, “J’Accuse!” portraits and memorabilia from the families of Dreyfus and Zola, letters, books, illustrations, rarely seen caricatures and early examples of photomontage.
