JEWISH STREET

Jewish Street, which has been known at different times as Friedrichstrasse and Berek Joselewicz Street, was the heart of Jewish religious and communal life in Oswiecim, dating from the second half of the 16th century. The street is likely a remnant of the original Jewish quarter of Oswiecim, where the most important Jewish institutions were located: the ritual bath (mikveh), kosher slaughterhouse, the first Jewish cemetery, synagogues, and religious schools – both chederim and yeshivot. Its most significant site, however, was the main synagogue in Oswiecim, which later became the Great Synagogue.
